This is my Manifesto about the work I make and wish to make, I aim to change this every few years to align with my current thinking. This is manifesto 2.0. I wanted to have other categories for Dancing and Fun, as these are equally important, but these things can be a natural bi-product through making work on the three main pillars of Honesty, Play and Awareness. Well, I believe so anyway….
Honesty...
Being honest with audiences in the work I make is crucial to me. Understanding the relationship between audience and performer is key to this. Becoming a character and building images in front of an audience helps establish this relationship. It also provides a foundation upon which I can explore concepts and indulge in my fascination with popular culture and scale. I’ve always found I have more fun when I am honest.
Play...
Being able to play really excites me, I think it’s the main reason I love making theatre. I also enjoy watching others use play to build and establish rules in performance, then play with the rules until they become broken or bent. It’s such a natural state for me and can seep into every avenue of a performance, you can play with structure, you can play with props, you can play with the audiences’ assumptions. Play is a tool that can create surprise, wonderment, interest and intellect without being patronising, without being false. Playing in life is also an important part of this for me.
Awareness...
Being aware of what you are presenting, of how you are seen to an audience is a key ingredient for me. Without awareness, we are walking through life without listening to the world around us and without listening, it’s hard to learn. Simply being aware of the world we live in is important to me.
